Earthen Floors
Earthen floors are among the oldest and most sustainable types of flooring. At Earth to Wall, we focus on two proven techniques: poured earthen floors and adobe tiles.
Clay floors combine traditional craftsmanship with modern demands for living comfort and sustainability. At Earth to Wall, we work with two different techniques: First, the poured earthen floor, which runs through the room like a continuous carpet and shows its strengths particularly in larger areas. Second, adobe tiles, which are laid as individual elements and are characterized by their flexible applicability. Both variants create an excellent indoor climate through their massive construction - cooling in summer, heat-storing in winter. The natural materials and craftmanship give each floor its unique character.
Natural Climate Regulation
An earthen floor is more than just flooring - it's an active part of the indoor climate. The thick clay layer stores heat and releases it evenly. In summer, the floor stays pleasantly cool; in winter, it supports heating through its thermal mass. Like clay plaster, it regulates the room's humidity and contributes to a balanced living climate.
Design Versatility
The surface of an earthen floor can be designed in many ways. Everything is possible, from a simple, velvety appearance to lively textures. Natural earth tones can be complemented with pigments, and the final oil and wax treatment gives the floor its characteristic, warm shine. Over time, each clay floor develops its own history and patina.
Sustainable Choice
An earthen floor is an investment in healthy living and sustainable construction. The materials used are natural and regionally available, and processing requires little energy. With proper care - regular oiling and waxing every few years - a clay floor can last for generations. Small repairs can be easily carried out, which additionally supports longevity.
Ideal for Underfloor Heating
Earthen floors harmonize perfectly with underfloor heating. The massive clay layer absorbs the heat from the heating pipes evenly and releases it gently into the room. Unlike many other floor coverings, this creates a particularly pleasant, natural radiant heat. Due to the high fiber content in the clay mixture and the special installation technique, the floor is flexible enough to accommodate the slight movements of the heating pipes.
Handmade Naturalness
Creating a clay floor is an exciting project for all DIY enthusiasts. With the right guidance and some practice, a clay floor can be installed yourself - whether as a continuous surface or in the form of adobe tiles. The manageable number of basic materials and relatively simple processing make it possible. Each self-made clay floor is unique, bearing the signature of its creator.

Timeless Floor Art
Earthen floors are more than just flooring - they are a piece of living building culture that combines tradition and modern sustainability. With their natural appearance and diverse positive properties for indoor climate and well-being, they are a forward-looking alternative to conventional floors.
